What Gordon Homes Need from an Electrician

Three suburbs' worth of housing share one postcode here, and each one wants something different from a sparkie.

The Federation stock came first, Queen Anne and bungalow, built between the 1890s and 1915 on large leafy blocks.

Mid-century houses filled in behind it. Apartment blocks came last, clustered by the railway and along the highway.

This is also the administrative centre of Ku-ring-gai, which makes the village along the Pacific Highway busier than most.

Fuse boards from another century. Federation and mid-century houses around McIntosh Street commonly still carry their original ceramic rewireable fuse boards.

A fuse protects a cable. It has never protected a person, and it cannot tell you which circuit is faulty.

Switchboard upgrades replace all of that with RCBOs and a board you can actually read.

Houses with no RCD at all. Older homes here that were never renovated frequently have no safety switch on any circuit.

That is not a nice-to-have. It is the difference between a fright and a hospital, and on a house this old it is the first thing we look for when the board comes open.

Double brick, weatherboard and everything between them means no two of these jobs run the same way. We price the access with the work, so the quote holds when the ceiling comes down.

The apartment stock asks a different question again. Smaller boards, shared services, and a committee to talk to before anyone drills anything.

And the Pacific Highway village brings its own work. Shopfronts, offices and consulting rooms run their lighting far harder than a house does, with emergency and exit lighting obligations a home never carries.

We quote all of it the same way: look first, price it on paper, then do what the paper says.

Our Electrical Services in Gordon

Six services carry most of our week here. All quoted free, all priced on paper first.

  • Switchboard upgrades. New board, RCBOs, safety switches, tidy labelling, and headroom for the next appliance.
  • Residential electrical. Rewires, GPOs, fans, smoke alarms, dead circuits, and thermal imaging for the faults that hide.
  • Lighting. Downlights, pendants, dimmers, floodlights and garden runs. Premium switchgear and fittings, because the cheap ones come back.
  • EV charger installation. We size the supply, run the circuit, then commission and test the unit before handing it over.
  • Level 2 electrician. Work on the incoming supply itself: mains, the point of attachment, your meter, and defect notices. We hold that accreditation.
  • Emergency electrician. Any hour of any night, when waiting until morning is not a sensible option.

The Faults Gordon Homes Report Most

Beyond the board itself, two jobs come up over and over on this housing stock.

  • Renovation rewires. The renovation market on these heritage homes is strong, and the cable behind a Federation wall usually predates the standards it now has to meet. Full or partial rewiring settles it.
  • Boards that ran out of room. Every appliance a big established house gains needs a way on the board. Sooner or later there is nowhere left to put one, and the board itself becomes the job rather than the thing you were adding.

Emergency

An Emergency in Gordon? We Move

Ring (02) 9538 7356 the moment any of this happens. These do not keep until Monday.

  • Burning, scorching or melted plastic smells at the board or a fitting
  • Sparks or arcing anywhere, including inside a wall
  • An RCD you cannot reset, or one that drops the second you do
  • No power to your place while your neighbours are fine
  • A cable, point or fitting that has taken water

Winters on this ridge run cool and damp, which is exactly when old wiring starts leaking current to earth and heaters push the load up. If your safety switch only ever misbehaves in the cold months, that pattern is a clue, not a coincidence.

Tell us on the phone and we will know roughly what we are walking into.

Why Gordon Homes Choose Us

We are next door, and that is the whole advantage. You sit on the run we already drive, so a booking here is an ordinary Tuesday rather than a trek across Sydney.

We are Master Electricians Australia members and NSW licensed, and everything is done to AS/NZS 3000. That is the floor we start from, not a selling point.

You get a real person on the phone, the price agreed on paper before anything starts, and $50 off if it's your first job with us.

Our Process on Every Gordon Job

  1. The call. Tell us what happened. A licensed sparkie will tell you whether to switch something off now or whether it waits for a booking.
  2. The quote. Free, on site, on paper, and itemised enough that you know exactly what you are buying. Nothing starts until you say go.
  3. The job. Drop sheets down and the place left tidy. Find something unforeseen and we stop, show you, and re-quote before touching it.
  4. The proof. Tested, photographed, certified and emailed. Your guarantee certificate lands with the paperwork.

Common questions

Electrician FAQs

Straight answers, no runaround.

Who does my compliance certificate actually go to?

NSW Fair Trading. On notifiable electrical work we lodge the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work with them, and a copy comes to you. Councils have no role in certifying electrical work, so nobody is waiting on a council for it.

What suburbs do you cover besides Gordon?

Our home turf is Turramurra. The same week also takes in Pymble, Wahroonga, St Ives and Killara, and each of those has its own page. If your street sits on the edge of one of them, ring us and we will tell you straight.

Why does a safety switch keep tripping in an older house here?

Usually because it is doing its job. Old wiring leaks a little current to earth once insulation perishes, and a damp winter makes it worse. One appliance is often the culprit, and a licensed electrician can isolate which circuit and which device.

What does a quote cost?

Nothing. Quotes are free, on site, with no call-out fee, and you get a fixed written price before we start. The price already covers parts, labour, GST, the testing and the certificate. There is nothing to bolt on afterwards.

How local are you, really?

Genuinely local. The suburb next door is our home turf, and we are here most weeks as a matter of course. We are not a call centre routing your job to whoever answers, and a real person answers the phone.

Do you look after units and strata buildings?

Yes. The apartment stock here is a regular part of our week: circuits inside the unit, common-area lighting, and the boards that serve them. Owners, tenants, committees and agents each book us direct. We fit in with whatever access the building requires, and we report it the way a strata manager needs to read it.
